About / How it all began…

Ron’s photography journey, from early beginnings to later career milestones.

Early Teens

Ron’s passion for photography developed in his early teens when he acquired his first 35mm camera a Nikon F which he still owns and uses!

Using black and white film his main subjects were street scenes around London’s Docklands and Brighton on the south coast.

He set-up his own darkroom in a small room at home complete with enlarger, chemicals, developing tanks, printing papers etc, and taught himself how to process film and produce prints. Inspiration and help came from his father, himself, an amateur film maker.

Through his own drive and determination and passion Ron forged his own career.

Home circumstances lead to a journey through many schools. School had little expectation Ron would amount to anything. Such were the times and how wrong they were.

First job! 1972, Assistant photographer at Westminster studios London SW1

Mid 1970s

Next step, mid 1970’s, as an assistant photographer, in a busy and buzzing photographic studio of a large London Advertising Agency. Ron soaked up valuable creative and industry experience whilst learning the technical craft of his trade.

At the age of just 24 it was time to move on. Ron became a freelancer, taking an amazing opportunity to acquire his own studio just off Baker Street in the West End of London. Harnessing his natural talent along with skills developed as an assistant he was now working for himself in a way he had always wanted.

Once settled in his new London studio Ron formed great relationships with those in the industry: Art Directors, Designers, Advertising Agencies and Design Groups. Using large format Sinar 10X8 and 5X4 cameras and film, he specialised in still life to begin with. This genre helped him a great deal in his early career, learning attention to detail, lighting a strict compositional sense and above all patience!

Disciplines he still uses to this day on all his work.

Offers soon arrived for more varied shoots taking him into new areas of photography and developing his skills and specialisms outside of the studio.

Photographing everything from people, landscapes, cruise ships, cars, intercontinental trains and aircraft, to open cast copper mines and plantations around Africa.

Early 2000s

Early 2000s: The “booming” period for digital photography.

When this huge technical change took place Ron readily embraced the transition, from film to digital, working with a completely new set of skills, including computers and digital capture software.

There had previously been no computer use at all, except for his early Amstrad he used to write invoices. The one with the green text!

None of this came cheap, and another massive investment in a PhaseOne Digital Back (the best one available) to fit his medium format cameras, was a must have. Imagine that!
